Literature (from Latin littera; letter), is the art of written works. Literally translated, the word literature means "acquaintance with letters" (as in the "arts and letters"). The two most basic written literary categories include fiction and nonfiction.

The term has, however, generally come to identify a collection of texts. The word "literature," as a common noun, can refer to any form of writing, such as essays; while "Literature," the proper noun, refers to a whole body of literary work, world-wide or relating to a specific culture.
